Thumbnail Filmstrip of Berseem Clover - Frosty Images
Berseem clover, scientifically known as Trifolium alexandrinum, is a cool-season annual legume. It is native to the mediterranean region, particularly Egypt. The plant generally grows to a height of approximately 30 inches, forming a lush, dense mat of green foliage. Blooms are appealingly white, sometimes with a hint of pink.
Berseem clover prefers soils with a fine texture, such as loamy soils, which facilitate its rapid growth and high yield. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade making it versatile for various planting schemes. The ideal pH range for berseem clover is between 6.0 and 7.5, which allows it to grow in moderately acidic to neutral soils.
In agriculture, berseem clover is a preferred choice for grazing due to its high protein content and palatability. This makes it an excellent fodder crop for livestock. Additionally, berseem clover serves as an effective cover crop improving soil health by fixing nitrogen thus reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. It also supports wildlife providing a habitat and food source for various pollinators and other beneficial insects during its blooming period.
There are two types of berseem clover, single-cut and multi-cut. Single-cut varieties tend to be faster to grow and seed whereas multi-cut varieties are capable of delivering multiple harvests in a single season.
Frosty is a variety of multi-cut berseem clover that has enhanced cold tolerance with a track record of surviving temperatures as low as 5 degrees.
