      Green sprangletop is a warm season perennial bunchgrass with fibrous roots native to North America. It grows 12 to 60 inches high and has is bluish-green to dark green in color. Green Sprangletop is a short-lived perennial. It provides good forage for livestock and is often utilized in range seed mixes because of its ability to grow in many different soil types. Green sprangletop will decrease or disappear with heavy or continuous grazing. Rotational grazing and appropriate stocking is necessary to maintain the grass.

      Van Horn is a cultivar release of green sprangletop. It was originally collected in 1975 near Van Horn, Texas and was selected for seedling vigor, forage value, and drought tolerance.
