Thumbnail Filmstrip of Sand Bluestem - Chet Images
Sand bluestem is a warm-season perennial bunch grass native to North America. It grows 36 to 84 inches and changes color throughout the year from blue-green during growing season to red at maturity. Sand bluestem is similar in appearance to big bluestem and the two will occasionally hybridize.
Sand bluestem is adapted throughout the great plains region on sandy, loamy sand, and sandy loam soils and is most commonly found from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi river.
Sand bluestem is an excellent forage for livestock and wildlife and is very palatable with high yield. It grows upright in large clumps and as such can provide excellent nesting habitat for birds and small mammals in the winter.
