Switchgrass is a robust native warm season perennial grass that can grow 36 to over 72 inches tall. It is considered one of the four highly desirable tall grasses along with little bluestem, big bluestem, and Indiangrass. Switchgrass provides nutritious and palatable grazing for livestock and good forage. Switchgrass is utilized by birds for food and nesting cover. Switchgrass is a decreaser in long-term heavily grazed pastures.
Alamo is a cultivar of switchgrass released from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service James E. "Bud" Smith Plant Materials Center in Knox City, Tx in 1978. It prefers deep soils that are poorly drained and sandy to clay loam soil structures.
