Switchgrass is a robust native warm season perennial grass that can grow 36 to over 72 inches tall. It is considered one of the four highly desirable tall grasses along with little bluestem, big bluestem, and Indiangrass. Switchgrass provides nutritious and palatable grazing for livestock and good forage. Switchgrass is utilized by birds for food and nesting cover. Switchgrass is a decreaser in long-term heavily grazed pastures.
Blackwell is a cultivar released in 1944 by the Soil Conservation Service and Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station. Seed from a single plant was harvested in 1934 on a native prairie site near Blackwell, Oklahoma.
